What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin dental restorations that have a shell-like appearance. They are designed to fit over the fronts of the teeth visible in your smile, covering over a variety of different imperfections. They can be used to correct issues such as:

•	Small cracks or chips in the very outer layers of your teeth.
•	Small, but visible, gaps between the teeth.
•	Minor overlapping that does not affect your oral health.
•	Small or misshapen teeth.
•	Discoloration that cannot be corrected, even with professional whitening.

Veneers are typically made out of one of two materials, composite resin or porcelain. Both materials match the color of your natural teeth. Composite resin is a more affordable option. However, porcelain is often the preferred material. This is because porcelain more closely mimics the natural enamel of your teeth, better able to match color and light reflection properties. Porcelain is stain resistant. It is also significantly stronger than composite resin and lasts several more years.

How are veneers placed?

The process of getting your veneers typically takes two appointments. At your first appointment, we prepare the affected teeth. After performing a thorough examination of the teeth to make sure that veneers are the best option for your needs, we administer a local anesthetic. This ensures that you do not feel any discomfort during the preparation of the teeth. Next, we remove a small amount of enamel from the affected teeth, creating the space necessary for the veneers to fit in naturally with the rest of your smile. We then take impressions of your mouth. The impressions are sent to a lab, where your veneers are designed and created. It takes approximately two weeks for your veneers to be made and sent back. When they are ready, you will return for your second appointment. We first check your veneers for a proper fit and then bond them to the fronts of your teeth using special dental cement.
