Your teeth are strong. They have to be to stand up to the daily use they go through. The teeth are the hardest substance in the human body. This does not, however, mean that they cannot be damaged. Whether your bite down on something hard, suffer facial trauma that results in tooth trauma, or experience decay, damage compromises not just your teeth but your oral and overall health as well. The longer you put off treatment, the greater your risk for infections, tooth loss, and health complications like heart disease and diabetes. If your teeth have been damaged, Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS can help with porcelain crowns.
A crown is a dental restoration that is designed to protect and restore a damaged tooth. It is a cap that covers the entire visible surface of the tooth and resembles the crown of a natural tooth in shape. By covering the entire surface of the tooth, the crown works to protect it from further harm, including bacterial invasion and infection and preventing the need for a tooth extraction.
Restoring Your Smile With Porcelain
Crowns can be made out of several different materials. The strongest material is metal. While strong, however, metal shows quite obviously. Porcelain fused to metal provides the strength of metal with an aesthetic porcelain coating. With these crowns, the metal often shows through the porcelain at the bottom, giving it away. At Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS, we use solid porcelain for your crowns. Now, this porcelain is nothing like what you might associate with fancy, delicate dishes. Porcelain crowns are quite strong and can stand up to most normal daily use. The material can be finished to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth, creating a seamless restoration.
Benefits of Porcelain Crowns
Aesthetics are just one benefit of porcelain crowns. Other benefits include:
Placing Your Porcelain Crown
Placing a porcelain crown takes two appointments. At your first appointment, we prepare your tooth by removing a portion of the enamel from the affected tooth, reducing it in size. By doing this, enough space is created so that the crown can fit naturally and function properly. Tooth preparation is done under a local anesthetic, which helps to prevent discomfort. After the tooth is prepared, we take an impression. The impression is sent to a dental lab, where your porcelain crown is created. It is made based on the exact specifications of your mouth and is finished to blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth.
It can take up to two weeks for the crown to be completed. While you wait, a temporary crown is set in place. Once your new crown is completed, you return for your second appointment. We check the crown to make sure it looks, fits, and feels natural. Finally, it is cemented into place and ready to use when you leave the office.
If you have a damaged tooth, it is important to seek treatment as quickly as possible. With porcelain crowns, damaged teeth are restored, as is the appearance of your smile. The crown also helps to protect your teeth from the need for an extraction. For more information, or to schedule your consultation, call Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS today (470) 400-2001.
