When your teeth are crooked, your smile is greatly affected. But this is not the only issue that crooked teeth present. Crooked teeth also have a major impact on your oral health, and your quality of life. Misalignment can make your teeth harder to care for, increasing your risk for developing tooth decay and cavities. It can cause uneven tooth wear. It can also lead to severe jaw pain that can make even just opening your mouth painful. Braces have long been the go-to treatment for crooked teeth, but the thought of metal mouth can turn many patients away from seeking the treatment they need. At Smiles by Shrenna Clifton, DDS, we can correct your misaligned teeth with Invisalign®.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces have been used for decades to correct crooked teeth, and are still a very popular option today. Moreover, with good reason. Braces are highly effective. They consist of three major components, brackets, bands and archwires. The brackets are attached to each tooth at the beginning of treatment and stay on throughout the duration. Metal bands are placed on the very back teeth and are used to anchor the wires in place. The archwires span across your teeth, attached to each bracket by an elastic O-ring. The archwires do the bulk of the work, being responsible for the movement and stabilization of your teeth. They may be effective, but there are many patients, particularly older teens and adults, who are not exactly fond of the idea of having a metal smile for several months while their teeth are straightened.
Invisalign® provides a much more aesthetic, and still very effective, alternative to traditional metal braces. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear aligners made from rigid plastic. Your aligners are custom created for you using impressions that we take of your mouth, which aids in producing the best possible results possible. As soon as the aligners slip over your teeth, they practically disappear from sight, rendering them essentially invisible when you smile. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® aligners are removable. However, in order to produce the best results in the shortest amount of time, they should be worn at least 20 to 22 hours a day. They should only be removed in order to eat and brush your teeth.
There are a number of benefits associated with Invisalign®.
How Invisalign® Works
Invisalign® actually involves the use of several aligners. Depending upon the length of your treatment, you may go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets. Each set of aligners is meant to be worn for two weeks, and the next set of aligners is slightly different than the previous one. The plastic is responsible for the movement of your teeth. Much like the archwires of traditional braces, the plastic puts pressure on your teeth, widening the sockets. The teeth are then guided into proper alignment with each changing aligner, and then stabilized once the correct positions have been achieved. Once treatment is over, you will be provided with a retainer to help maintain the appearance of your new smile.
